Evaluation for Post-Production
Post-Production
The projects that
were sent of the post-production were using already produced footage, edited
them together to make three separate pieces of work. Each piece of work was in completely
different genre comedy, non-sync drama and a documentary. With each project
they were different criteria for example different lengths, pacing and
character development. With each project I have develop my skills in the
editing process learning from what worked in the others and gain from elements
what did not work and take that to the next project. The main editing system
that was used for the projects were avid media composer, which is the first
time using that system. So I had to start from the beginning and starting the
module later then other people because of personal reasons. With that the first
two projects were both supposed to be in pairs, as I came into the module late
u for was not enough people so I had to work on my own for the those. While the
last project you have to work on your own, working on my own the other two did
come with some advantages that I took into the final piece.
Which were that I
did not have to rely on another person to met up and do the work or them not
pulling their own weight. Another is that it solely my work meaning while in a
pair sometimes a person would take control of the work and the other person
would not have much input on it as the other. I got a good flow going with the
I had to do the projects and an order that I would go through each one with. With
being on my own for the first time projects when it came time to do the third
one I had already know how work and time goes into doing a project on my own.
The disadvantages that I found with working my own for those projects were that
at the beginning with the first two projects, which were very quite large in
footage and audio. Going through those files and finding the ones that would
like to use for the film. Would have been easier if they were another person to
help go through the footage and it would have been easier and faster.
The first piece
that we had to do was the documentary called The Movement which is a about a
young Sheffield poet and the poet scene in Sheffield. He also discussed his
background and how he became apart of the poetry scene. The brief for this
piece was that it had to be between four and half to five minutes long and you
had to bring out a general appeal to the main person to the audience. The
footage for he piece is made up of different types of scenes, they are
interviews with main person inside an apartment another outside in a forest
area and at the poetry night event. With each interview he says how he came to
be here, how did he get into the poetry scene where does he get his inspiration
from and how the events have help him and how it is a family to him with the
other poets. The other footage is that of him saying some of his poetry to
camera and also footage of other poets performing their work at the events.
The way that went
around making the edit for this was to balance between the interviews and the
footage of the events together where it flows together and hopefully does not
seem that it is not just cut scenes together where they do not connect. For the
piece as well I had to sync up the audio for when he performing his poets inside
because the audio is not best and the people made the footage knew that. So
they recorded the performance again in a more control environment so that they
good a better sound quality. Then they are process of sync up the audio from
the new sound recording to the video footage of him performing. The way to that was to while in avid when you
have the two clips you want to use is make both the clips in from when they are
marked with the clapperboard. Then selected both of those clips so they are
highlighted at the same time, then click audio sync which will created a new
sub click with the new audio and video together. I decided to not to use
footage with him talking about his past because I wanted to focus more on the
poet scene and how poetry affects him. I had also made use of the other people
footage at the event because he mentions in one o the interviews that one of
his favorite poets is coming to the show so connect one of the interviews to
the performances.
The areas that I
had problems with the footage was that in the performance of the other artist
at the event the people who where recording it. Did not also get the best
camera angles for them as with the wide shot they did at the back of the room
sometimes would started to pan across the room which would mess up that
performance because they would go back the same which make that performance
unusable. Not ever other performance were record in full as they were to other performances
or with the same amount of camera angles which was difficult if you want to cut
between different shot for one performance.
The second
project is called Night Journey and is non-sync drama, which is where they are
no actual audio to the video files. It is where they have not recorded the
dialogue or any other sounds when filming the video for the film. So we have to
make a narrative on own will do audio voice over for the piece but they are
free range to create your own story. Within the brief where the piece has to be
between four and half to five minutes you also have to structure a narrative with the material
supplied and
show effective and considered use of voiceover. The footage is
mostly set on a train journey with most of the film been set about two men who
are in a train carnage, with one who may have psychotically disturb. They is
also footage of train station with the other man waiting and boarding the train
and exterior shots of a city streets, as well of exterior places outside the
train as it goes past different location. They is also a script available for
the audio clips with the voice over, which tells the story that one of the men
may be a cannibal and the other man is very worried about him.
One of the big parts of this piece was in the beginning when having
to import the files because the sizes of them are large. Which when it comes to sub clipping and name
each individual shot it is a large takes at hand so that takes up most of the
beginning of the project. They way I made the piece was to have slow build to
the voice and not use much till later on in the film. The purpose of this was
so that I could build up a tense and atmosphere and hopefully make the audience
interested in what is going on before the voice comes in to explain what is
going on. The way I edited the piece to that was to slowly build to the two men
into the cabin together until near half way through the film. The reason I
wanted to do that was that when they do appear in the same scene it shows that
something bad is about to happen. I will also be doing this through music that
I but into the film I was able to gather music that is very atmosphfic and
gives a feeling of dread which is should carry through when we reach the cabin.
I also made use of the fact that you can make your own narrative to
the way I edited the footage so that I can try and throw normal convention that
you have to use for other projects. For instead in this film I tried to find a
way of the audience understanding what is about to happen before they seen the
main characters through the atmosphere I try to create.
The final piece
was a comedy about a Yorkshire milkman; with the project you can choose a scene
to do out of several options. The one that I choose was about the main milkman
al and his co-worker sabotaging a local supermarket with a sigh saying that
that they should use their milk to the supermarkets. The manger of the store
confronts al and knees him in the groin, which is the main comedian part of the
piece. When looking through the footage I found that they is not enough footage
for the brief which states that the film has to be between two and half till three
minutes long. The footage was not long enough when I first cut it together with
out dragging the piece, meaning that I would have had to extended shots where
they is really nothing going or parts that could be shorter. So the way that I
decided to do it was to at the beginning of the film is to show the knee to the
groin in the first few seconds of the film. Then flashback to before the knee
to the groin so that it shows to the audience the events leading up the groin
shot. I also used a freeze frame to the when he knee just on his face because
the reaction is very humorous and works well for the freeze frame.
I also used a
music that matches with the tone of the piece, which is more of a cheesy sitcom.
So I use the music first during the freeze frame part of the piece that introduces
the rest of the piece. When it came to the ending of the piece where the two
milkmen are arrive at al sister house. The other milkmen like a baby are
carrying him, I made the cuts be quite quick up to the part the way that that
he is picked up and then hold on the wide.

Christopher Rouse
One filmmaker that I have admired allot of
his work is English director Paul Greengrass. The reason for this is for the
way he films his movies, the hand free style, docudrama nature feel to his
films and the tense sequence that occur frequently over the course of his
films. While looking into the films that enjoyed a lot by Paul Greengrass The
Bourne Supremacy, United 93, The Bourne Ultimatum, Green Zone and the latest
release Captain Phillips. Christopher Rouse an American editor who has edited
them all and from those films he has been nominated for academy awards for film
editing twice and won once in 2007 for The Bourne Ultimatum. With areas of Paul Greengrass filming that
may seem a very difficult challenge to edited but Rouse has managed to do so.
With that the collaboration between to the two has created some of the most
tense sequences in film.
The
rooftop scene The Bourne Ultimatum
In this scene Rouse mages to intertwine the
action three-separated character in the chase scene where Nicky is being chased
by a assassin who is chased to Jason Bourne is chasing him, who is being
followed by police as well. He mages to create great tension while all so inter
cutting between the characters with grace. You don’t feel confused with what is
going on, you know where each character is and the direction they are heading.
The
Hijacking Captain Phillips)
This is where the hijackers are trying to board the ship after their first attempted failed the way that it slowly builds tension from first spotting the pirates at a distance to as they slowly get closer to ship. Is brilliant as the pirates get closer to the ship it cuts between the captain and crew of the ship. The closer they get to the ship the more hectic inside the ship is shown as the crew more around frantic to try and stop the hijackers. the way that he mangos change between the bridge, crew and the pirates is very fine meaning that you would see normally it being quick cuts but he stays received and only using cuts between that are let you now what is going on and giving the audience a space to breath.

This film having one of the most touching subject matters the hijacking of one of the planes on one of biggest tragic terrorist attacks in recent history. The plot of the film follows one of the planes that was supposed to hit the white house but thanks to passengers who tried to take back the plane it crashed in field harming no people on the ground but everyone on the plane died. The scene where i believe that is one of the most brilliant edited scenes is the end scene where the passengers take on the hijackers it is done such well timed flow while mixed with hart breaking tension.

House of 1000 Corpse - Execution Scene
The build up the moment is very quick with fast cuts then to the when the last police officer is hold up. the cuts start to slow down as the officer begs for his life and while the man with gun insults him. Then it cuts to a wide shot where from the side of both of them. Then it stays on that shot and pulls out to a high angle must of been shot with a crane and then holds of on the shot for a while until the gunshot. It does this without cutting to other shots. This shows great restraint in not over cutting the scene and hold for a while until the gunshot builds up great tension.
